Individuals: Householding and Shared Communications Part I: Overview
- When you create a relationship between two contacts and indicate that they are living in the same household, they are said to be "householded."
- When two or more contacts live in the same household, they are both given the Contact Type "Household" (depicted by a house icon). In addition, the Household View button will be added to their records on the View Contact screen.
- Clicking on Household View button will allow you to see a roll up of everything the entire household has done with your organization (donations, memberships, event registrations, etc.).
- You'll know you're in household view because you'll see the household salutation in the upper left hand corner of the screen, instead of the individual contact name.
- The information in the Giving Summary section updates overnight. This data can be pulled into reports (as a filter, sort field, and output field) (it is on the Household View table) and used in Advanced Search.
- Household View has its own layout configuration controls. Click the blue Layout Configuration button in the lower right hand corner to edit the layout of Household View. Any edits made here will change the layout of Household View for ALL records, but only for your login/for you (each staff person can configure the Household View layout to their own preference). Use the check boxes on the left to turn off any modules/widgets you don't want to see in Household View. Drag and drop the modules/widgets in the right hand panel to change the order that the widgets appear on your screen.
- There is no save button in the layout configuration screen. All of your changes are automatically saved. When you are done, click the Back button (blue arrow) in the lower left hand corner to exit out of Layout Configurations and return to the previous screen.
- To leave Household view and return to an individual contact record, simply click on the name of any of the household member in the upper left hand corner.
- Contacts that are householded can share email addresses, phone numbers, and home address.
- Home address is shared while first setting up the household or by editing the relationship on the contact's Relationship Tab (see the Individual Contacts: Householding and Shared Communications Part II: Create/Add To Household tutorial for more information).
- Email address(es) and phone number(s) are shared by using the Share With button under the email address/phone number field. See our Individual Contacts: Add/Edit/Share/Delete Email Address(es) and Individual Contacts: Add/Edit/Share/Delete Phone Numbers tutorials for information on how to share email address/phone number with other household members.
- If contacts are sharing a home address, email address, and/or phone number, you will see a notation on both parties' records in View Contact and in Edit Contact modes.
- Home (shared) Address, shared phone number(s), and shared email address(es) can be updated from any household member's record.
- See our Individual Contacts: Household and Shared Communications Part II: Create/Add To Household tutorial for how to create a household or add contacts to a household.
- See our Individual Contacts: Household and Shared Communications Part III: Split/Remove From Household tutorial for how to remove a contact or all contacts from the household.
