Text to Donate Part I: Configure Text to Donate Page
- The Text to Donate feature allows donors to be sent a link via SMS (text) message that they can use to donate. The link directs the donor to a special, "one-click" slimmed down donation portal/page.
- The donation link can be sent to the donor either as an automatic response to a text the donor sends to your configured keyword/short code or it can be sent manually to donors by sending out a mass text message to contacts in your NPE database ("text blast" similar to an e-Blast but via SMS/text message).
- Text-to-Donate is a paid add-on; clients are charged one time fee of $55 and after that $0.02 per text sent and received. This includes the automatic thank you message sent in response to a donation made via the text-to-donate portal. As such:
- if the donor sends a text to the keyword, receives the automatic response with the donation page link, makes a donation, and then receives the automatic thank you text message, you (the client) are charged $0.06 (3 texts sent/received x $0.02 per text = $0.02).
- If 3 donors followed the above flow, you would be charged 0.18c (.06c per donor x 3 donors)
- if you (the client) send a text blast to the donor, the donor clicks on the link in the text blast, makes a donation, and receives the automatic thank you message, then you (the NPE client) is charged $0.04 (2 texts sent/received x $0.02 per text = $0.04).
- if 3 donors followed the above flow, you would be charged $0.12 ($0.04 per donor x 3 donors = $0.12).
- Clients are charged PER TEXT MESSAGE SENT AND RECEIVED regardless of whether the donor donates/regardless whether any donations are received.
- It is possible to accidentally send to landline phone numbers (if you have them miscategorized in your CRM as cell or mobile). Each phone carrier decides how to handle text/SMS messages sent to a landline. Some carriers will reject the message, in which case, the message status would be FAILED and you would not be charged for that individual text. Some carriers do accept/pass through the message and this would be marked as SUCCESS and you WOULD be charged for that text, even though the recipient didn't receive it. So it is critical that you correctly categorize phone numbers in your NPE system to avoid paying for texts sent to landlines.
- Text-to-Donate charges are charged/paid MONTHLY to NPE/Fundly and will be automatically charged to the credit card on file. Text-to-Donate charges will show on your account statement (which you can generate in your My Account) area.
- if the donor sends a text to the keyword, receives the automatic response with the donation page link, makes a donation, and then receives the automatic thank you text message, you (the client) are charged $0.06 (3 texts sent/received x $0.02 per text = $0.02).
- Regardless of how the donation link is sent to the donor (in response to donor initiated text or via a client initiated text blast), the first step is to configure one or more tex-to-donate donation pages.
- Please Note: to access the "set up text to donate page" configurations, the Text-to-Donate module must be turned on in your system (go to Account Menu: Account: My Account and click the Activate button next to Text to Donate. On the resulting screen, click Purchase, confirm the "purchase" (there is no annual charge, just the per text sent and received charge).
- Once you have activated Text-To-Donate, we (NPE's support team) will reach out to you with the next steps as we need to create your business profile with Twilio (this is our back end process). Twilio needs to verify your data to be sure that the feature will be used wisely and to enhance the deliverability of messages.
The TTD security include several deliverability enhancements for clients, including:
- dedicated phone number; previously, all clients shared the same TTD phone number. Now each client will have their own dedicated TTD phone number, which will be tied to your sender reputation specifically (similar to a dedicated domain/server for email). Less chance of texts being blocked as spam due to other senders' internet reputation.
- brand certification; sort of like domain authentication for email, we have completed a brand certification process for your organization that verifies the TTD sender who is who they claim they are
These two changes will improve deliverability of text blasts for clients, and though these changes do involve additional fees (about $100 per year total additional costs), we have absorbed those fees rather than passing them on to clients and are holding the pricing of TTD for the time being at $0.02/text sent and received.
For that we need to make some changes for clients who are willing to use Text To Donate. So, can you please provide the below details so we can make changes for your account text to donate feature.
Please note: If you have a US entity or an International Tax ID, please send EIN to register your business profile and to avoid brand registration failures. Do not send a DUNS number.

- Additionally, in user roles and permissions, the user must have access to BOTH Fundraising and Configure Text to Donate Page.
- To set up a text-to-donate page, start by clicking on Fundraising on the Main Menu and then select Text to Donate Pages.
- This will take you to your Text-to-Donate index page. Here you will find a list of all of your configured Text-to-Donate pages.
- You can check the status (whether the page is active (accepting donations) or not as indicated by a green check mark (active) or grayed out check mark (inactive) in the Activated? column.
- If the page is active (accepting donations), you will see the date the page was published/made active in the Activate Date column.
- You can edit any configured Text-to-Donate page, edit/change the keyword/shortcode associated to any Text-to-Donate page, or view the metrics/page summary data by clicking the drop down to the right of any page and selecting the appropriate item from the menu.
- To create a new page, click the Create Page button in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
- In the resulting pop up box, enter the Keyword/Code Word (short code) that the donor will text to the Text-to-Donate phone number in order to receive the automated message with the donation link (the keyword is irrelevant for text messages with the link that you/your organization initiates using the text blast function. However, the keyword is required to set up the page). Please Note: the keyword must be unique ACROSS ALL NPE CLIENTS.
- The keyword can be letters and/or numbers.
- The keyword must be a minimum of 3 characters and can be a MAXIMUM of 10 characters.
- If you enter a keyword that is not unique (across all clients)/that is already in use, a red X will appear next to the keyword field and when you attempt to save a red error message will appear on the screen.
- After entering the keyword, click the Create Page button.
- Once the keyword pop up box closes, you will be taken to the text-to-donate page configurations. Keep in mind that the donation form/page is a slimmed down, "one click" page that sits on our server. You can add your logo, a banner image, and set the complimentary text color but the rest of the layout is hardcoded/cannot be configured.
- The Keyword and Phone Number that donors will use to request the donation page URL will show at the top of each page of the set up flow. While you can choose/configure the keyword, the phone number is fixed and cannot be customized (and only a U.S. based phone number is available).
- Start by giving your page a name in the Page Name field (required); this is an internal reference and will not be seen by the donor.
- Next, select the Fund that donations made via this page will be associated with (required). The Fund must be configured ahead of time (you cannot configure a new fund from this screen). The Fund drives the ask amounts and the tax deductibility of the donations. Please Note: When you send the link to donors via text blast, the system will recognize the donor based on a tracking cookie embedded in the link. As such, dynamic ask arrays WILL work for text-to-donate and will customize the ask amount for each donor.
- Next select the Gift Source from the drop down (required). You cannot configure a new Gift Source from this screen; it must be configured ahead of time. Gift Source is how this donation made its way into your NPE database. Did it come in online, in the mail, etc.
- After selecting Fund and Source, a real time, INTERACTIVE preview of your donation page will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. You can click through the various donation page screens, fill out the fields, etc. The only thing you can't see is the live credit card fields on the last page. There are NO configurations you can make to the online donation page/screens. The fields that are required to be filled out will be driven by your duplicate prevention settings.
- You can optionally link the donations made via the Text-to-Donate page to a specific fundraising campaign and/or program and/or event by selecting the items from the drop down fields. Neither of these are required.
- By default, donors will only be able to make a one-time donation via the Text-to-Donate page. If you want to allow your donors to make recurring donations, click the Allow User to Make Recurring Donations check box.
- When you have finished the configurations on this page, click Save in the lower right to save your changes and return to the configurations later or Save and Proceed to move to the next tab.
- On the Appearance tab, by default your organization's logo (from your My Account: Organization Info tab) will show at the top of your donation page. You can replace this logo with a banner image that you choose.
- To upload a banner image to appear at the top of your online donation page/portal, click in the banner field and select an image from your computer. The banner will replace your logo.
- If you wish to delete the banner, click the Delete Banner button and confirm you wish to delete the banner. Your organization's logo will replace the banner.
- To upload a banner image to appear at the top of your online donation page/portal, click in the banner field and select an image from your computer. The banner will replace your logo.
- Set the Accent Color (used in the "Donate Now" text at the top of the screen and the donate now button at the bottom of the screen by clicking in the field and using the color picker pop up to select the color OR you can directly type in the six character "hexadecimal" color code (preceded by a pound sign (#).
- When you have finished configuring this tab, click the Save button in the lower right to save your changes and return later or the Save and Proceed button to save and move to the next tab.
- On the SMS Text tab, configure the message that will be sent to people who text the keyword to the phone number in the Response SMS field. This field is required. This field is limited to 140 characters and must contain the text-to-donate page URL placeholder ("{link}"). Please Note: the exact URL of the text-to-donate page is generated automatically by us/NPE and CANNOT be customized by clients. Please Also Note: that the text-to-donate system cannot be used to send texts that do not contain the donation page link (that is, it cannot be used to send "regular"/non-donation appeal text messages).
- Next, if you wish your donors to receive an automatic thank you text message after they make a donation, configure the thank you message in the Thank You SMS field. This content is also limited to 140 characters. Please Note: you will be charged $0.02 for every thank you message sent. You can omit the thank you message by leaving the field blank.
- Finally, when you have finished configuring all of the fields, click the Save button in the lower right to save your changes and finish setting up your page later or the Activate button to set your page to active.
- If you click the Activate button, your page will become active and donors can start texting the keyword to the phone number immediately. The set-up text-to-donate page screen will close and you will be taken to the page's Dashboard/metrics page.
- After activating your page, you can receive donations via it either of two ways: publicize the keyword and number to text the keyword to (via postcards, emails, social media posts, etc.) or use the "send text blast" function within CRM to send a donation ask and the donation page link directly to donors via text message. See the Text-to-Donate Part II: Send Text Blast tutorial for more details on sending a text blast to your contacts.
