Funds: Funds are what a donation is, such as a Scholarship fund, Sponsorship, Event Donation, etc. Funds also may indicate the appropriate donation acknowledgement letter to be used for donations of that type.
Program: Programs are your organization's Mission. They also represent what a donation is for; restriction on the use of the donation; designated contributions. Often representing aspects of your operations, mission statement or significant goals requiring funding. Many sources of revenue can tie into a program such a donations, event fees and grants.
Campaigns: Campaigns represent fundraising efforts; such as an appeal, ad, or newsletter. May also represent a large event and all fund raising efforts around it.
Gift Sources: Gift Sources are the channel by which a donation comes to be made, such as In Person, Online or By Mail.
The following example configuration is based on a made up arts organization, called the Monty Crisco Arts Center, that sends out quarterly donation appeals, provides scholarships to students and has the following simple mission statement.
To bring appreciation and knowledge of the arts to the Monty Crisco community through exhibitions, events, classes and community outreach.
Campaigns: Fall Appeal 2015, Winter Appeal 2015, Spring Appeal 2016, Summer Appeal 2016...etc
Funds: General Donations, Scholarship (locked to scholarship program), Event Sponsorship (locked to Events program), In-Kind Donations
The Scholarship, Event Sponsorship and In-Kind Donation funds would have custom acknowledgement templates attached to each, while General Donations would use the system default.
