Contacts: Individuals: Add/Edit Relationships
- This tutorial will cover how to add and edit contact relationships for Individual contacts.
- Relationships represent the social connections between individual contacts and can include both familiar and non-familiar connections.
- Spouse/partner relationship will show on View Contact under the contact's name. All other relationships will show on the orange Relationships Tab.
- When editing a record, spouse/partner and children IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD will show on the Personal Info tab. ALL relationships (including spouse/partner and children shown on the Personal Info tab) will show on the Relationship tab.
- To edit any of the contact's relationships while viewing the contact record, click on the magnifying glass on the Relationships tab. This will take you to the Relationship tab of Edit Contact.
- You can also get to this screen by clicking on the Edit Contact button at the bottom of the screen and then clicking on the Relationship tab.
- On the Relationship tab (of edit contact), you will see a list of all current relationships that the contact has, the type of relationship, and whether they are in the same household together.
- To edit an existing relationship, click the drop down to the right of the name and select Edit. To delete a relationship, click the drop down to the right of the name and select Delete.
- When editing the relationship, if you change the Same Household toggle from No to Yes, you will enter the Create Household flow. See our Individual Contacts: Householding and Shared Communications Part I: Overview and Individual Contacts: Householding and Shared Communications Part II: Create/Add To Household tutorials for more details on householding (what it means, how it works, shared communications among household members, etc.). If you change the Same Household toggle from Yes to No, you will enter the split household flow. See our Individual Contacts: Householding and Shared Communications Part III: Split/Remove From Household tutorial for more information.
- There are three ways to create a new relationship:
- While viewing the contact record, click on the + button on the Relationships dropdown. This will take you to the Create Relationship screen (see step #11 below).
- While adding (full add) or editing a contact record, add a name to the spouse/partner or child fields on the Personal Info tab. Please Note: if you add a name and click save (without checking the Same Household box, the relationship will be created behind the scenes/you won't enter the Create Relationship flow. You will need to go to the Relationship tab and edit the relationship to complete set up. If you do check the Same Household box, then you will enter the create relationship process as normal/as detailed below.
- On the Relationship tab click the blue Create Relationship button in the bottom right of the screen.
- While viewing the contact record, click on the + button on the Relationships dropdown. This will take you to the Create Relationship screen (see step #11 below).
- The Create Relationship pop up window will appear. Start by adding the name of the contact this relationship is with by typing their name into the Choose Contact field, and select the correct name once it appears. If the contact is not already in your database, type the name and hit Enter or Tab. The Quick Add contact pop up will appear and you can add the contact "on the fly."
- Next, select the appropriate relationship from the drop-down. Users can configure this list of relationships on Main Menu: Configurations: Contact Information: Relationships. See our Configure: Relationship Types tutorial for more information on configuring relationship types.
- If these contacts live in the same household, indicate this by activating the Part of Same Household slider. Contacts that are in the same household will be able to share contact information including emails, and physical addresses and associate cross-relationships/relationships between all members of the household (please see our tutorial on householding for more information on householding and shared communication profiles).
- When you are done creating the relationship, click the Save button in the lower right hand corner to save. Select Close to cancel without saving.
- Please Note: if contacts are not in the same household, you will need to create cross-relationships manually. For example, if Sarah and Jim are married and you indicate that Kathy is Sarah's sister, you will have to also manually add a relationship between Jim and Kathy to indicate that they are sister/brother-in-laws.
